Australian Access Awards winners

Winners of the 2019 Australian Access Awards were announced at an awards ceremony in Fremantle, Western Australia, on 12 December 2019. The ABC NEWS app from Australian Broadcasting Corporation was recognised as Government App of the Year and overall Accessible App of the Year. triple j app was a finalist for Government App of the Year.

Late stage web accessibility validation is stupid

Just like a structurally solid house, your accessible website is a much better product, usable by anyone, anywhere on any device, which brings you more influence, sales and everything you want your web presence to be. It should be a valuable investment for years to come.

If it’s that important, why would you relegate accessibility verification to the end of your web build? That’s like checking your foundations after building the house. Pretty dumb, huh?

Global web accessibility standards have officially changed

After almost a decade, the global standard for web accessibility has changed. With a stronger focus on accessibility in relation to mobile devices, people with low vision and people with cognitive or learning disability, it’s an important step to ensure online inclusion for everyone.

Helping everyone to watch TV - the fight for audio description

Most Australians don't question the right to watch TV. Provision of captions for people with impaired hearing is legislated in the Broadcasting Services Act (1992) but the 'completing the picture' for people with impaired vision is not similarly mandated. TV4All, a campaign from Blind Citizens Australia hopes to change that.
